Career Highlights

Last week I was interviewed over at Books for Little Hands. One of the questions asked what had been the highlight of my career so far and I found it a little difficult to answer, partly because of my maddening tendency to want to unpack the nuances of every word put before me.

I wanted to wrestle for a while with the word 'career' and what that really meant for me and whether it was the 'right' term for what I'm doing with this whole writing thing. And the highlights I arrived at had nothing to do with 'career' really and more to do with small creative satisfactions. So it may be that my response was a bit disingenuous. Possibly even pretentious.

And then the very next day something happened. I had a genuine career highlight, and it was this:

In April this year, my book Duck for a Day was adapted for musical theatre by Tony Bones Entertainment.Description: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EMT8jEJ-V1M/TtWSiLp1lwI/AAAAAAAAAeo/i4RkcT-vSFQ/s200/tonybones.gif

Since they only tour on the east coast, I didn't get to see the show, but last week, the lovely Tony himself sent me a DVD of one of the performances. And I feel a little ridiculous, but watching it made me a bit teary.

Description: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YeS8Os1-tdM/TthbIzXKZKI/AAAAAAAAAfY/Ag25TFq_xiY/s320/Max%2Bmarionette2.jpgFirstly, it was gorgeous. It was so well done - so cleverly adapted, so professionally and engagingly presented. The kids in the audience were clearly completely absorbed by the show. Then at the end, Tony talked about the book - why they chose it and how they adapted it, which I found really interesting and which in fact taught me a bit about narrative structure, and what I was doing without even realising it.

Secondly, it made me remember the few shows that I got to see when I was a kid, when performers came to our school, or we walked into town in a long crocodile line ("Just remember who's in front of you and who's behind you and we'll all be okay"). Those experiences have stayed with me. They have a certain glow that persists to this day. And I can't help but be moved by the possibility of that being true for some of those kids, that my story, brought to life so wonderfully, will stay with them. I know that books can work in the same way, but having Duck adapted feels different somehow. Which brings me to my third point ...

Seeing other creators adapt my work

made me feel like my story was becoming, in a small way, part of the fabric of things, becoming more embedded in the creative landscape. It's hard to articulate what I mean, but it's something I found enormously satisfying.

Fourthly, and finally, Max as a marionette. Just saying.

So, there you are. A career highlight. A real one. Thanks, Tony.

Reviews for the book:

Abby’s class has a class pet – a class duck, in fact. Max is a gentle duck who sits on children’s feet, or waddles and quacks around the classroom. When Mrs Melvino says that no one can take Max home unless they have just the right conditions for a duck, Abby is determined to get things right so that she can be the first one to take Max home.

But Noah, the new boy, who lives in the house behind Abby, wants to be first, too. Even when Abby has her chance to look after Max, it seems Noah is still plotting. Having a duck for a day could prove harder than Abby expects.

Duck for a Day is a delightful new chapter book about class pets, responsibility and friendship. While Abby learns about what it takes to get what you truly want, she and Noah both learn about friendship, and the adults around them learn about trust. Most of all, though, young readers will enjoy the fun of seeing the chaos one little duck can cause as it waddles its way into the lives of the children.

With whimsical grey-scale illustrations by Leila Rudge, this is novel to love.

Sally Murphy

'A delightful story of sharing and working together, this book is a charming response to a scenario often seen in primary classrooms. The joy of the class pet is reflected in the wonderful illustrations and the whole book is joyous to read ... This is a wonderful book, rich and multilayered, one which would be a fabulous read aloud in a primary school, if it is on the shelf long enough for a teacher to find.'

Testimonials

I have watched the show and loved it (on DVD). … I wanted to say how very much I loved the performance of Duck for a Day. I was simply amazed at what you did with it. You were a fantastic Mrs Melvino and a gorgeous Noah. It was just so clever - the way you did it with such a small cast and minimal props. I had no idea such a thing was possible. I still can't get the songs out of my head - aQUAtic! It's become an ear worm... I couldn't be more thrilled…. I really did love it to an unreasonable degree. There were points at which the characters, or certain story elements, were presented differently to the way I imagine them, but I find that fascinating in itself - I'm really interested in the adaptation process and to what extent the new format creates its own text rather than a 'version' always relative to the original, if you like. It's also useful to me to reflect on the way things are in my head versus what actually made it onto the page. It's easy to forget that there's a whole invisible world behind the characters that no one sees but me and it's so interesting to see how they come across to others. I also loved the little talk you did at the end; was really glad that part got filmed as well….Thanks again, Meg” Meg McKinlay, Author “Duck For a Day”
